There are a couple of possible reasons for receiving this error message. The first is that there is possibly a problem reading from the CD. It has been our experience that most disc read errors can often be solved by cleaning the CD-ROM with a soft cloth or oil-free facial tissue moistened with rubbing alcohol. This is true even for "fresh-out-of-the-box" discs which sometimes have a layer of fine dust from the packaging. Once it is cleaned, try the installation again.
If it is still reporting the same error message, we suggest you try copying the files directly from the CD with the following steps:
- Insert the disc in the drive. On the Install screen, click the Exit option.
- Open the My Computer option, which may be found on the desktop, or on the Start menu.
- Right-click the drive that has the disc in it.
- Select the Open option from the pop-up menu.
- Go to the Edit menu and select the Select All option. All the files and folders should now be highlighted.
- Go to the Edit menu and select the Copy To Folder option.
- On the Copy Items window, scroll to the top of the list and click the Desktop option.
- Click the Make New Folder button.
- You should now see a folder labeled “New Folder” with the text highlighted. Change this to something like “Copy Test” and click the Copy button.
This will attempt to copy all the files from the disc to your computer’s hard drive. If you get an error message while it is trying to copy the files, it is likely that there is a problem with the disc itself. In that case, please contact Technical Support.
If all the files copy with no problem, then there may be an issue with one of the settings in your registry. Please try the following:
- Click the Start button and go to the Run option.
- In the Run window, type “regedit” without the quotes on the Open field and click the OK button. This will open the Registry Editor.
- Scroll to the top of the left-hand side of the window to where you can see the My Computer option.
- Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder. If it has a plus (+) sign next to it, click the plus sign. If it has a minus sign next to it, skip to the next step.
- Click on the plus (+) sign next to the SOFTWARE folder and this will expand a list below it. If it has a minus (-) sign next to it, skip to the next step.
- Click on the plus (+) sign next to the Microsoft folder and this will expand a list below it. If it has a minus (-) sign next to it, skip to the next step.
- Click on the plus (+) sign next to the Windows NT folder and this will expand a list below it. If it has a minus (-) sign next to it, skip to the next step.
- Click on the plus (+) sign next to the CurrentVersion folder and this will expand a list below it. If it has a minus (-) sign next to it, skip to the next step.
- On the list that appears below CurrentVersion, locate the Winlogon folder. Click once on the Winlogon folder name.
- On the right-side of the window, double-click on the "allocatecdroms" name.
- Change the Value Data field to "0" without the quotes, if it is set to anything else.
- Close all windows.
- Restart your computer.
